With "Ode to the Landscape" we reflect on the versatility of Hollands Kroon. The landscape has been a source of inspiration for artists, among others, for centuries and we will show this in 2021. We will not only consider the beauty of the landscape, but also its vulnerability. The landscape is not only beautiful on a sunny summer day. Beauty can be found in all seasons and at all times. With Ode to the landscape we show how beautiful, fragile and diverse the landscape, nature and our culture are.
The former fishing village of Kolhorn lies in a sea of meadows. The village is located behind the dike, so it is not difficult to imagine that this was once a port on the Zuiderzee. Due to the reclamation, it is now in the West Frisian landscape.
Wieringen is a former island between the Waddenzee and Zuiderzee and is wonderfully beautiful. Rolling greenery, hedgerows that protect cattle and cyclists from the wind of the sea, historic farms, cozy villages, winding roads. And the sea is always close by, and so are the sea birds. Gulls, common terns, spoonbills and geese call Wieringen their home.
Anyone who knows the Netherlands a little knows that it has a rich history with water. Characteristic icons such as mills, polders, pumping stations, mounds and dikes are good examples of this. The Afsluitdijk is perhaps the most impressive example of Dutch Delta Design. And with more than 600,000 visitors annually, it is also one of the most popular waterworks in the Netherlands.
It was the beautiful Russian wife of King Willem II who gave her name to this polder. A few centuries later, the beauty of Anna Paulowna still shines here. The bulb region is at its best in spring; the fields then have all kinds of colors. It is even the largest continuous flower bulb area in the world!
Photo competition Ode to the landscape
Hollands Kroon has a diverse and unique landscape. We want to capture that together with a photo competition. The most beautiful photos are selected and printed on postcards. In addition, the four most beautiful photos win a prize.
The farmers rest points route consists of 10 wooden benches with an information board. The route was set up by farmers themselves, in places they experience as very special. Views of polder landscapes, streams and growing crops. At each bench the farmer proudly tells visitors through an audio tour and video images what farming means to him and to our municipality. Hollands Kroon, agricultural capital of the Netherlands!
On the Ijsselmeer coast you will find hidden stories that reveal many secrets. We have portrayed twelve beautiful and moving stories for you. Narrated by residents from Hollands Kroon and surroundings. Think of the hole in the dyke that the Germans blew up in 1945, the remains of which can still be seen. But also at the Leemans pumping station, archaeological finds and the construction of the Afsluitdijk.
You have beautiful views of the Wadden Sea, the IJsselmeer and the Dutch polder. Just outside Hippolytushoef you drive past Molen De Onderneming, a thatched corn and hulling mill from 1851. It smells wonderfully salty here. In good weather you can see the Kop van Noord-Holland and Texel.
