Middenmeer is still very young, compared to many villages in Holland above Amsterdam. It did not see the light of day until 1932 when the dikes in the Wieringermeer polder were closed and land arose where water once stood. On 17 April 1945, this land became submerged again when the Germans flooded the polder. The village of Middenmeer was thus born twice, as in December of the same year the land was reclaimed once more and a start could be made on rebuilding the village.
This is the place to come if you love wide open spaces, tranquillity and panoramic views. Seen from above, the landscape looks like a green patchwork quilt intersected by straight roads, ditches and canals. Pleasure boats like to moor here in the harbour on the Wieringerwerfvaart. Just outside the village, along the A7, is an enormous greenhouse horticulture complex which is open to the public. Agriport grows the most vegetables in the country, from orange peppers to snack tomatoes.
