Exhibition: The history of Kolhorn in words and pictures
Kolhorn was originally (ca 1350) a transhipment port for Schagen. Over the centuries, Kolhorn developed as a port. For whalers, light skippers, peat skippers, sea fishermen and Zuiderzee / IJsselmeer fishermen. In the museum we show parts of that history, with an emphasis on anchovy fishing.
With the draining of the Waard and Groetpolder in the mid-19th century, a large arable area was created. Madder turned out to be a product that grew well on the still salty soil. In addition, the madder helped make the clay suitable for growing other crops. In the museum we show more about the cultivation and use of madder.
